Skills Gap

A skills gap is a mismatch between the skills employers need (demand) and the skills workers have (supply). Within a city, a skill is in shortage when employer demand exceeds worker supply of that skill. And a skill is in surplus when worker supply exceeds employer demand. A city with a shortage of a particular skill needs more people with that skill, and a city with surplus skills has more people than jobs available for those particular skills. We measure Austin’s skills gaps in terms of absolute headcounts based on the skills of local LinkedIn members.

(Note: as of August 2018, we’ve updated our methodology to measure absolute skills gaps, rather than relative skills gaps as we’d shared in previous reports. Learn more about our new methodology here.)
